This book presents an analysis of the relation between verbs and constructions within the theoretical framework of Cognitive Grammar and the Semantic Map model, and elucidates universal and language-specific properties of constructions.
In the framework presented in this book, constructions are characterized in terms of cognitive processes and central domains in a set of cognitive domains termed “complex matrix.” Central domains are distributed on a “conceptual space,” and constructions are mapped on the conceptual space, which constitutes the “semantic map.”
The framework is applied to two concrete cases in order to capture the relation of verbs and constructions: V-te iru constructions in Japanese and Resultative constructions in Japanese and English.
This book will not only be of interest to researchers working in Cognitive Linguistics, but also to teachers working in English and Japanese.
