This is the fourth volume of Studies in Language Sciences. It mainly contains papers originally presented at the Fourth Annual JSLS Conference held at Japan Women’s University on July 6 and 7, 2002. The volume includes the plenary lecture by Andrew Radford, the special lecture by Yukio Tono, and six papers from the general session presentations. The present volume also includes four papers originally presented at the Fifth Annual JSLS Conference held at Kobe University on July 5 and 6, 2003. The decision was made to include in this volume some papers presented at the expanded Fifth JSLS Conference. Some of this work might not otherwise, for reasons of space due to page limitations, be able to be included in the next volume.
